Inspiration Toile de Jouy, 17th C. France
Toile-de-Jouy takes its name from the factory at Jouy-en-Josas, close
to Versailles, where the technique of machine printing fabric using
engraved copper plates was perfected in the mid 18th century. Invented
by an Irish printer, this innovation allowed detailed pattern to be
produced relatively inexpensively. These sprigs are taken from a Toile-de-Jouy
print,
embroidered in silk yarn on a gold silk ground.
